Tea for two at home

A pot of tea for two is one of the simplest ways to spend time together. A small table, a tea you both enjoy and teaware that suits how you brew are all you need.

Here is how to set up an easy tea moment at home, from choosing the set to the last cup.

  1. 01

    Choose the set

For two, a pot of 200–400 ml and two to four cups is plenty. A glass pot lets you watch the leaves open; a ceramic set with a bamboo tray brings the feeling of a tea table to any surface. A sharing pitcher makes sure both cups taste the same.

  2. 02

    Warm the teaware

Pour hot water into the pot and cups, swirl and empty it into the tray or a bowl. Warm teaware keeps the tea at the right temperature for longer.

  3. 03

    Prepare the tea

Use the amount and water temperature on the pack, then adjust to your taste. For botanical teas, a few rosebuds or chrysanthemum flowers per cup is a good start; add two or three red dates for natural sweetness.

  4. 04

    Pour and share

Pour the whole infusion into the pitcher or straight into the cups, so the leaves do not over-steep. Most botanical teas and many leaf teas can be infused again; simply add hot water.

  5. 05

    Add something small

A few pieces of dried fruit, such as mulberries or longan, go well with a light cup. Keep it simple, so the tea and the conversation stay at the centre.

  6. 06

    Clear up together

Empty the pot, rinse the teaware with warm water and let it dry with the lid off. Our care guide explains how to look after glass, ceramics and bamboo.
